Episode 8 Recap: Second Sons
In Game of Thrones Season 3 Episode 8 Daenerys, Barristan and Jorah spy on the encampment of the Second Sons, a professional mercenary company, from behind a ruined building. The Yunkish slavers have employed the Second Sons. After Barristan explains that even though there are only 2000 of them, the Second Sons are armored well enough to bring trouble for the Unsullied; Daenerys has him organize a meeting with their captain. Shortly after, Daenerys meets with Captains Mero and Prendahl where she offers an alliance. The captains reject the offer and point out that if they are to join her, they will not get their reward until after she has claimed the Iron Throne, which still seemed like a distant prospect. It is here that Daenerys instructs Barristan that if they ever are to fight the Second Sons, he should kill Mero first. In the mercenary camp as Mero discusses the earlier situation with Prendahl and Daario, it becomes apparent that they do not agree with Daario. They eventually agree to assassinate Daenerys and the responsibility of this fall on Daario. Later that night as Daenerys has her bath; Daario enters and holds a knife to Missandei’s throat. He explains he has been sent by his captains to kill Daenerys, but they ran into an argument about her beauty. Daario then produces their severed head and swears his sword, heart and men to Daenerys.
Meanwhile, Gilly and Samwell Tarly continue their journey to Castle Black, deciding to spend the night in a destroyed cabin that was next to a heart tree. Later in the night, Sam suggests to Gilly that she should name her son. When she doesn’t have any boy’s names in mind, he gives her suggestions but outright refuses the name Randyll. They are all over sudden interrupted by squawking of crows outside; on going out to investigate they see a white walker approaching them. This horrifies Gilly because she knows it is after her child. Sam tries to stop the walker, but the Walker knocks him aside and proceeds towards the baby. Sam gets back to his feet and stabs the walker in the back which makes it fall on its back and gets shattered. They then run away, chased by the crows.
Arya and Sandor continue the journey North. She contemplates killing him but is unable to follow through. The Hound tells her that he saved Sansa from rapists. They begin their journey to The Twins, where Catelyn and Robb currently are.
Melisandre and Gendry arrive at Dragonstone. Melisandre seduces Gendry then ties him to a bed. She then places leeches on him to get king’s blood. She and Stannis then use these leeches as part of a blood curse to kill Robb Stark, Balon Greyjoy and Joffrey. Stannis visits Davos in the dungeon, then releases him under the promise that Davos will not attempt to displace Melisandre.
Sansa and Tyrion are married. Tyrion ends up spending his wedding night drinking heavily and ignoring his father’s insistence that he will be unable to impregnate his wife. At the same time, Joffrey is also drinking himself into a stupor and getting very offensive to Tyrion and Sansa. Joffrey then taunts Sansa that she still got away to get married to a Lannister. He goes on to tell her it doesn’t matter which of the lannisters gets her pregnant and that he might want to rape her after Tyrion is through with her. Once in their chambers, Tyrion passes out, and his bride remains a virgin.
