Margaery Tyrell is the only daughter of Lord Mace Tyrell and Lady Alerie Tyrell. Her father rules the Reach and she was raised in privilege as a lady of House Tyrell in Castle Highgarden. Margaery is renowned for her beauty and clever wits.
After Robert Baratheon’s death and during the War of Five Kings, Margaery is betrothed and married to Renly Baratheon. Before they are able to consummate their marriage, Renly is mysteriously killed by a shadow – assumed to be the work of the Red Woman.
In a move to ally themselves with the winning side, the Tyrells negotiate a betrothal between Margaery and Joffrey Baratheon. Whereas Sansa was scared of Joffrey’s violent and sadistic tendencies, Margaery uses his personality to her advantage. She manipulates Joffrey by playing to his pride and interests, stroking his ego and pretending to enjoy his vicious past times.
Joffrey and Margaery’s marriage are very short-lived. Shortly after exchanging vows, Joffrey is mysteriously poisoned at the wedding feast and dies choking. The union of the two houses is uninterrupted as Margaery is then set to marry the next in line to the throne, Tommen Baratheon. Margaery is often seen receiving counsel from her shrewd grandmother, Lady Olenna Tyrell.
Margaery Tyrell is played by Natalie Dormer and is a major character in Seasons 2, 3, 4, and 5. One of her most memorable lines and insights into her character is in reply to Lord Baelish’s question – “Do you want to be Queen?” Margaery replies, “No. I want to be the Queen.”
