Episode 3 Recap: What is Dead May Never Die
Season 2, Episode 3 of Game of Thrones, ‘What is Dead May Never Die’, opens as Jon Snow, bloody and ragged, is dragged by Craster back to his home. After which, Craster banishes the Night’s Watch from his home. Mormont decides not to get involved, no matter how disgusted he is with Craster. Samwell Tarly gives Gilly a thimble from his mother and tells her that he will see her again when the journey to Castle Black is made.
In the seven kingdoms, Bran Stark continues to have direwolf dreams that are dismissed by others. Catelyn then walks in on Brienne of Tarth defeating Ser Loras Tyrell in a bout, allowing her to take a place in the kingsguard. Renly then introduces Catelyn to his wife, Margery. Catelyn tells Renly to take the war more seriously.
Balon has a war council that is focusing on attacking the North while the Lannisters are busy fighting elsewhere. Theon is angered when he is sent on a single ship raid while his sister gets to order about thirty ships. Theon suggests that they make an alliance with the Starks and his father chastises him and hits him. At the end of his screen time, Theon is baptized by a Drowned Priest.
Shae complains to Tyrion about being couped up in the tower, and he works with Varys to get her a job as Sansa’s handmaid. Sansa then has a dinner with Cersei, her captor, and Cersei’s children. She is not pleased with Cersei at all and maintains her royal upbringing.
Tyrion gives a different marriage plan to each person on the council in order to see which person is Cersei’s informant. The individual turns out to be Pycelle after Cersei confronts him. Renyl is then pressured to have an heir by Loras and Margaery. Margaery suggests bringing Loras in during lovemaking in order to get him to produce a heir.
At the end of Season 2, Episode 3 ‘What is Dead May Never Die’, Arya is helped by Yoren for her insomnia troubles. Golden Cloaks barges in on this. Yoren dies bravely in the battle and Arya rescues Jagen H’ghar, but she is incapacitated. Gendry is captured along with others, and Arya tricks the captors into thinking that Gendry was Lommy because Lommy had his helmet.
To recap, the Night’s Watch along with Jon Snow, in their ranks, are banished from Craster’s home. Bran Starks dreams are worsening. Brienne of Tarth earns a spot in the kingsguard, and Catelyn warns Renly about the war. Balon’s war council favors Theon’s sister, and Theon decides to stay true to his family, even though he and his father are at odds. Shae gets a job as Sansa’s handmaid and forms a tentative friendship. Tyrion discovers Cersei’s rat within the council. Later, Arya is in a full battle for Gendry.
