Episode 4 Recap: Cripples, Bastards, and Broken Things

Bran Stark is sleeping and dreams that he is practicing archery at the courtyard. He then sees a raven that is flying into the yard. He is curious and runs to see it. He notices that it has three eyes. Bran then wakes up from his sleep. Bran Stark sees Theon Greyjoy, who tells him that Robb has commanded him to come and see the visitors, if not Hodor will carry him down to the hall.
Yoren and Tyrion Lannister have stopped at Winterfell on their way south. Tyrion asks Bran whether he can ride. Tyrion then gives Bran the blueprint for a saddle that will help him ride. This shows an act of kindness for Tyrion. Robb then wants to know why Tyrion is kind to Bran. Tyrion tells Eddard that he is always kind to cripples, bastards, and broken things since he is also one. Robb then offers Tyrion the hospitality of Winterfell, but Tyrion refuses.
Ned Stark has started looking into how and why Jon Arryn died. Along the way, he finds one of Robert’s bastards. He also wishes to question Arryn’s former squire, but learns that he was killed in a tournament. Elsewhere, Sansa learns the story of the Hound’s ruined face — he was held in a fire by his older brother as a child.
Across the Narrow Sea, Daenerys begins to stand up for herself. Viserys attempts to hit her. She hits him in return and warns him that if he tries to touch her again, she will have his hands cut off. She has begun to realize that Viserys would not be a good ruler for Westeros.
Catelyn and Ser Rodrick Cassel stop at the Crossroads Inn on their way back to Winterfell. They meet a singer by the name, Marillion, who wants to offer a song to them, but they refuse him. Tyrion then asks anyone who would like to provide a bed for him that night and a sellsword agrees. Catelyn then says that Tyrion is a betrayer and that he should by seized and returned to Winterfell to wait for the king’s justice. Tyrion is apprehended at the Crossroads Inn.
