Robb Stark

Robb Stark is a character in seasons one, two, and three of Game of Thrones, played by the actor Richard Madden. His first appearance is in the premier of the show.

Robb Stark is the oldest son of Lord Eddard Stark and his wife Catelyn. They rule the North from Winterfell. He has four siblings; Sansa, Arya, Bran, and Rickon. However, since Robb is the eldest, he is the child to inherit rule of the privnce after the execution of Lord Eddard by King Joffrey. Robb is very close to his family as well as his illegitimate half-brother Jon Snow and his father’s ward Theon Greyjoy. He also owns the direwolf Grey Wind, who he adopted from a litter of puppies he found with his siblings in the woods. Robb is commonly referred to as the Young Wolf.

After being declared King in the North, Robb starts a rebellion against the Iron Throne. During the rebellion, he proves that he is a very skilled tactician and battle commander, winning several battles and capturing Jaime Lannister, but he lacks the necessary political skills to run a kingdom.

Although he had made an oath to marry Walder Frey’s daughter, which would have been the correct move politically since Walder was a strong ally, Robb changes his mind and decides to marry Talisa Maegyr. This effectively lost him Walder Frey. He also put Theon Greyjoy, his close friend, up to the task of negotiating a potential friendship with the ironborn. However, Theon goes on to consequently betray him and Theon takes over Winterfell along with the ironborn. Finally, Robb manages to alienate the majority of his army, who happen to be Karstarks, when he executes Rickard Karstark for killing some young Lannister boys. Rickard was the leader of the Karstarks.

All of these moves left Robb Stark with very little political power and a large number of enemies. He attempts to win back his alliance with the Freys by promising his uncle in marriage to Roslin Frey, but the attempt turns out to be fatal for him and many others. Before the wedding the Freys teamed up with Tywin Lannister, as did Robb’s bannerman Roose Bolton. At the wedding between Roslin Frey and Edmure Tully, the Freys turn on Robb and his family. They kill Robb, Catelyn, Talisa and many others in the event that would later be known as the Red Wedding. Robb is killed by Roose Bolton.

After the death of Robb and much of the Stark clan, the rebellion in the North is ended, at least temporarily. Being so completely defeated and deprived of the power, the rule of the North is taken away from the Starks.
